Washington comes first, after four to five hours on the road with a coffee stop on the way. The guide covers the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, spends about an hour at the Lincoln Memorial, and stops outside the White House and the Capitol, with an hour for lunch on your own.

Philadelphia follows, about three hours further. The guide walks you through Independence National Historical Park for the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, then finishes at the Rocky Steps in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art before the drive home.

It is a long day — about 17 hours. The listing says "per person", but the total barely moves with group size: $2,038 for one or two travellers and $2,040 for four on the mid-October date we checked, which is about $510 each for a group of four.
