The private car barely changes in price between one and three guests ($3,050 for one, $3,070 for three), so it behaves like a per-car fare. Even at six guests it is more than five times the group fare. The private Washington and Philadelphia day works out cheaper than the DC-only car at every size we checked, at about $510 each for four.
The train route is the hardest to pin down because Amtrak fares change daily. An advance Northeast Regional saver ticket from Penn Station to Union Station can start around $30 each way, while a late-booked Acela can run to $200 or more each way. Add that to the private guide’s $520 per group (up to five people) and a couple travelling on cheap advance fares could spend roughly $320 each for a private day. Book late on Acela and the same day climbs past $600 each.
